About the program

The Esports organization at Linn-Mar high school was formed from the merging of two clubs in the 2019-2020 school year, the Video Game club and the Technology Club. Students try out and compete in multiple game titles and are encouraged to participate in tournaments to build their experiences. Linn-Mar Esports stresses the importance of balancing all aspects of a student’s life whether it is academic or nonacademic.  Students are held to the same academic standards for participation as students who participate in other sports such as football or basketball. Esports is a 9th through 12th grade activity and is open to all students at Linn-Mar High School.  There is no cost to participate in esports as we fundraise to purchase equipment.

The Linn-Mar Esports organization is broken down into two components. Club and Varsity play.  Club play is open to all students at Linn-Mar High School.  There is no requirement to join the Linn-Mar Esports Club other than following the general club rules and sharing the enjoyment of playing video games.  Linn-Mar Esports has Nintendo Switches and various Gaming PCs available for students to use.

Linn-Mar Varsity Esports is the next level up from Linn-Mar Esports Club. To participate in Linn-Mar Varsity Esports students must try out for a varsity team, maintain a specific grade point average, and follow all the rules and guidelines of both the Linn-Mar Varsity Esports program and the Iowa High School Esports Association.  Students on the Varsity Esports Teams must attend practices set up by their respective Coaches and participate in league sanctioned games. Players who do not follow the rules of the Varsity Esports program may be removed from the Team and/or the Varsity Esports program.

Communication about team try-outs, upcoming events, league games and important information is done through the team’s Discord server. The Discord server is open to all Linn-Mar students who are interested in video games and participating in the club/varsity program.  The server is moderated by the coaching staff all of which are district employees.  In regards to Discord, students can’t use the school computers / internet for Discord. We publicly stream our varsity matches on our twitch stream which is open to anyone to view. Past matches can be found on the team’s YouTube channel.

Students who participate in Varsity Esports can earn a varsity letter from the High School! We also have various colleges in Iowa scout our program / matches to recruit players to play for their colleges so there is a potential for college scholarships as well!
