LMHS Senior Serving as a Legislative Page in Des Moines

Stacia Drey, a senior at Linn-Mar High School graduating in May, is in one of the most exciting places in the state right now.
She’s working as a page in the Iowa House of Representatives, assisting Republican Speaker Pat Grassley, from Butler County. Grassley is serving his seventh term and is the grandson of Senator Chuck Grassley.

“I heard about this opportunity from people at my high school that had done it in past years and also had my counselor and government teacher recommend it to me,” Drey said.

Stacia Drey, sits at her desk in the Iowa House of Representatives, next to House Speaker Pat Grassley.

Her typical day starts at 8:30 a.m. and includes “gaveling in” Speaker Grassley, controlling the microphone and camera system in the House. She also takes photos for the newsletters and talks to representatives and guests in the Republican office.

Drey plans to major in political science on a pre-law track at either Iowa or Iowa State. She said, “I think being around all of the legislators (some of which are attorneys back home) will help me make connections and get experience. I love being here and working among the legislators. I can’t wait to learn more through my time here this session.”

“I think this is an awesome adventure!” said Drey.

In addition to her page duties, she is also taking a government class and studying Spanish at Linn-Mar as online classes.
Drey is living with a family outside of the city, unlike most of the pages, who get apartments to share, near the capitol in downtown Des Moines.
