Lions Football Season Kicks Off Friday
Friday, the Linn-Mar Lions football team kicks off their season opener against the City High Little Hawks.
The game will also see the return of players from 1981-1987 who have been invited to attend. These Linn-Mar Lions football alum will meet with Athletic Director David Brown prior to the game and tour the Lions’ locker rooms. At the start of the game, the 81-87 Lions will be recognized on the field.
According to Brown, Coach Greg Purnell is celebrating his 70th birthday and wants to see as many former players, fans, and parents as possible, “especially anyone who has a complaint from 30 years ago,” Brown said.
“One of the tough things about leaving Marion and the metro area is that I never get a chance to see the great players and kids that I used to coach,” said Purnell. “I hope they all will be able to make time to come to this game – as I get older I really appreciate all the memories I can share with these boys!”
Head Football Coach Paul James says, “I’ve always had a lot of respect for Greg and I’m glad he is helping to connect the teams from Linn-Mar’s history with our current teams.” James went on to say, “the hard work and commitment he gave to the development of the Linn-Mar Football program in the 80’s became the backbone for everything the Lion Football teams have accomplished since that time.”
A reception will be held at Louie’s in downtown Marion after the season opener for the Lions. The alum and their families are invited to attend.
Additionally, the public is invited to attend “Donuts with the Coach” from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at Happy Joes Pizza in Collins Road Square.
