Linn-Mar School Board Approves New Names
The Linn-Mar Community School District Board of Directors voted during its February 10, 2025 meeting to approve names for two district buildings, and for a special space to honor a long-time district volunteer.
The former Learning Resource Center (LRC) will now be known as the Academic Excellence Center, and the district’s new administrative building will be called the Educational Leadership Center (ELC). In addition to these changes, the Board also approved the naming of a baseball concession stand as the Pete King Concession Stand.
The Academic Excellence Center and the ELC were selected by a committee led by a group of high school students who gathered suggestions from their peers, Linn-Mar staff, and the broader Marion community. The students carefully reviewed submissions, including suggestions from a previous naming process used for Boulder Peak and Hazel Point intermediate buildings, before narrowing down the options to the names presented at the board meeting.
“Just like the Colton Center and the Learning Center are specific spaces located within our high school, the name ‘Academic Excellence Center’ describes another distinctive space used for other high school learning,” said Linn-Mar High School senior Mehal Raghwani, one of the Linn-Mar students from the naming committee who presented suggestions to the board. “This space is for high school students from Venture, Atlas, and Compass, and we feel this name is inclusive of all of these high school programs.”
The board also recognized Pete King for his work in supporting the district as a Booster Club volunteer. This request was brought forward by the Linn-Mar Booster Club to honor King, a long-time volunteer who dedicated countless hours to supporting the district’s athletic programs. King joined the Linn-Mar Booster Club in the early 1990s and remained an active volunteer long after his sons graduated from Linn-Mar. He was a familiar presence at concession stands, particularly at baseball events, and his contributions left a lasting impact on the community. In addition to the renaming, the Booster Club will be installing a bench in King’s honor at the ball complex.
A ribbon-cutting event will be held in the spring of 2025 to recognize the remodeled Academic Excellence Center and to invite the public into the new ELC. An additional recognition event for the Pete King Concession Stand will be coordinated with the Booster Club at a later date.
