Linn-Mar Intermediate Schools Win People’s Choice Award

Linn-Mar’s new Intermediate Schools, Boulder Peak and Hazel Point, have been recognized by the American Institute of Architects Iowa Chapter with a 2021 People’s Choice Award.

Linn-Mar partnered with OPN Architects to build identical intermediate schools as part of an overall restructuring plan to address capacity issues at the elementary and middle schools. At the start of the 2020 school year, Linn-Mar was able move all fifth graders from the elementary buildings and all 6th graders from the middle school buildings into an award winning building.

“We wanted the building to be able to withstand the rapid growth of the Linn-Mar Community. By building two identical intermediate buildings, the school district was able to save money on the design and it was able to accommodate its current students with room for future growth.” – Roger Worm, OPN principal and the lead designer of the project. 

The building design incorporates a neighborhood concept which breaks down the size of the new building into more appropriate neighborhoods for 5/6 grade students. There are eight color-coded neighborhoods spaced throughout the two-story building, organized around the center featuring the music, art, gymnasium and cafeteria.

The neighborhood concept encourages teacher and student collaboration while providing a safe and comfortable environment for students to learn to their full potential.
