The Linn-Mar Community School District is excited to announce a special concert featuring the West Point Glee Club Knight Caps, set for Sunday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. in the Linn-Mar High School Auditorium. This free event highlights a talented subset of the West Point Glee Club, including Linn-Mar alumnus Cavan O’Hara, who is currently a senior at the United States Military Academy.

O’Hara’s journey from Linn-Mar to West Point has been shaped by a diverse range of experiences within the school’s music program. “The opportunities I had in the Colton Center, from participating in jazz band to full orchestra to show choir, were crucial in developing my musical abilities,” he shared. He expressed particular fondness for his time in the Colton Center Jazz Ensemble, along with his participation in cross country and track during his senior year.

Reflecting on the educational foundation provided by Linn-Mar, O’Hara noted the significant role of various classes in preparing him for West Point. “Courses like Wind Ensemble, Chamber Singers, and AP Music Theory were vital to my musical growth,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of Speech and AP Chemistry in his academic success. “The skills I gained in those classes have been invaluable, particularly in my current studies as a Chemical Engineering major.”

O’Hara expressed gratitude for the educators who have influenced him throughout his high school years, singling out several key teachers. “Mrs. Marcia Smith, my speech teacher, was always able to give me insight to what I was doing and a different perspective on my assignments. Mrs. Laura Azelborn in AP chemistry always made it her main objective to ensure that we were learning and understanding the materials in her class,” he said. He also recognized the entire music department, praising their commitment to fostering talent and creativity among students.

As O’Hara reflects on his time at Linn-Mar, he encourages current students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. “Don’t wait to explore your interests and get involved. Time flies in high school, and there are so many activities and programs at Linn-Mar just waiting for you to invest in them,” he advised.
