Linn-Mar Bell Restoration Project Unites Alumni and Students

The Armstrong Victory Bell at Linn-Mar High School is set to shine anew, thanks to a restoration project led by the Class of 1973 and current students. This initiative not only revives a beloved symbol of community spirit but also strengthens the ties between alumni and today’s students, creating a meaningful connection across generations.

The History of the Armstrong Bell

The bell originally came from the Concord one-room schoolhouse, one of thirteen rural Marion Township schools located at the corner of Highway 13 and 151, where Dupaco Credit Union stands today. After the schoolhouse was demolished, the bell was carefully preserved on the farm of John and Mary Ketelson, where it remained for many years. In 1968, John Ketelson, a founding member of the Linn-Mar Booster Club, and his fellow members made the decision to relocate the bell to Armstrong field, where it has proudly stood until 2011.

The bell, named in honor of Dr. William Armstrong, serves as a poignant reminder of his legacy. Dr. Armstrong was a cherished physician in Marion, known for his dedication to the health and safety of his community. Tragically, he lost his life in a plane crash on February 6, 1970, while heroically ensuring the safety of his passengers. To commemorate his contributions, the Linn-Mar community established the Armstrong Victory Bell, which tolls every time the Linn-Mar Lions score, echoing the compassion and commitment that defined Dr. Armstrong’s life.

Restoration Effort Supported by Linn-Mar Students

At the 2023 reunion of the Class of 1973, alumni noticed the bell was in need of repair, showing signs of wear from the years. Inspired by their fond memories and their commitment to preserving this piece of history, they came together with a strong commitment to restore the bell. This sparked a collaborative effort involving the Linn-Mar School Foundation, teachers, and current students, all working hand in hand to bring the bell back to its former glory.

The restoration process began with the bell being sandblasted to eliminate years of wear, revealing its original cast iron. A durable powder coating was then applied to enhance its lifespan, followed by a fresh coat of vibrant Linn-Mar red paint. Guided by Linn-Mar’s metals teacher Jeremy Brown, students took on hands-on roles, crafting a new support bar and stand, refining the ringing mechanism, and creating a new handle. After their work was completed, the bell was sent off to have decals and lettering added, paying tribute to its rich history.

“This project has revived the longstanding tradition of the bell, fostering a sense of pride in Linn-Mar and providing current students with a unique opportunity to connect with their school’s heritage,” commented Jeremy. “They have not only developed valuable technical skills in strategic design, welding, and cutting but have also experienced the importance of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.”

The Bell Comes Home During Homecoming

The culmination of the restoration will be showcased during this year’s homecoming festivities, aptly themed “Ring the Bell.” The bell will be unveiled during the homecoming parade on Wednesday, September 25, followed by a special ceremony before the football game on Friday, September 27. These events will celebrate both the revitalization of the bell and the enduring spirit of the Linn-Mar community.

As the Armstrong Victory Bell tolls, it resonates with pride, uniting families and fans of Linn-Mar alike, even those unable to attend games. Each chime reflects the community’s unity and commitment to celebrating its shared traditions and history.
