Highlights from November 19th School Board Meeting

The work session was dedicated to highlighting student learning at the High School with Dr. Gustason, Mr. Nietert, and Mr. Goodall sharing great information on instructional decision-making for student learning, an overview of the 2018-19 school year including current and projected enrollment, considerations for current high school initiatives, an overview of the Compass Alternative Center, and information on PowerSchool Learning and High Reliability Schools.
The regular meeting included a discussion on one-to-one (1:1) digital learning. Information was presented on the rationale for 1:1 digital learning including, but not limited to: changing times in education, more personalized learning, PowerSchool Learning, equitable access to technology, school from home option on weather days, and online courses. Other topics included the goals of 1:1 digital learning including: equity, Iowa Digital Learning Plan, leadership, teaching with technology, engaging and empowering learning through technology, assessment, and infrastructure. An overview of implementation planning and logistics was also shared.
Motions were approved for the resolution for sale of school bonds and setting a special session on December 3rd at noon to review/approve the bid, second reading of policy recommendations, School Budget Review Committee application, designation of depository, letting of bus bids, open enrollment requests, and the consent agenda.
The next board meeting will be hosted on Monday, December 10th in the boardroom of the LRC (2999 N 10th St, Marion). Due to the holiday concerts, the work session has been cancelled and the regular meeting will begin at 5:00 PM.
