Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Section 504 ensures that the student with a disability has equal access to an education. The Linn-Mar Community School District has systems in place to ensure an eligible student receives the proper support. For more information, please see your school counselor or contact the district’s 504 Coordinator: Ms. Megan Burke-Brunscheen, Associate Director of Student Services at 319-447-3359 or via email.
Who is eligible for a 504 Plan?
Students eligible for Section 504 accommodation plans must meet the following three criteria: 1) A mental or physical impairment, 2) which substantially limits, and 3) one or more major life activities. All three criteria must be present for a student to be eligible for a Section 504 accommodation plan. Equally important, this disability must be why the student cannot equally access or receive benefits from the school’s programs and services.
